Reproduction Services for Stallions 

Reproductive Evaluations, Cooled Semen, Semen Freezing & Storage, Phantom Training, Standing Stallions

For pre breeding season or prior to stallion purchase you can depend on  HEMC to perform semen evaluations for motility, concentration and total sperm numbers, cooling and freezing.

A test-cool panel is recommended for each stallion  to determine which extender and what cooling period bests suits the stallion. Samples are cooled for 12, 24 or 48 hours in semen extender then checked for  longevity. 

Semen Freezing & Storage

HEMC can test freeze semen and determine if your stallion is a good candidate for freezing. 

A phantom reduces the potential for injury and transmitting disease for both the stallion and mare.

We offer phantom training for stallions that have never used one and most  stallions can be trained to use the phantom without hesitation with in a few days. 

We use an adjustable phantom to accommodate various sized stallions. 

Reproduction Services for Mares 

Reproductive Evaluations, Embryo Transfer, Artificial Insemination, Fertility Management, Foaling Services

To determine suitability of the mare for breeding an examination of the reproductive tract, vaginal  examination, and culture of the uterus are done to recognize potential complications. A post-foaling evaluation will assess any damage so corrections can be made to preserve future pregnancies.
 

Artificial Insemination
Artificial insemination is very popular among breeders. It offers less risk of injury and disease to both mare and stallion.  It requires evaluation of follicle growth, determination of appropriate breeding time, ordering, evaluation and insemination of semen, and assessment of any potential complications. 

Embryo Transfer
Embryo transfer requires careful monitoring and estrus (heat) cycle synchronization of both the donor and the recipient mare(s), breeding and flushing of the donor mare, processing of any embryo found, and transfer of the embryo into the recipient. This service allows a mare to continue showing and performing while still having one or more offspring every year.

Foaling
HEMC offers on-site 24 hours a day surveillance monitoring to attend and assist in foaling. We also use a foal-alert (a small transmitter) is sutured to the  foaling mare. As the foal passes through the birth canal, two parts of the transmitter separate thus sending a radio signal alert.

Dr. Bohnhoff and the staff of HEMC strive to stay abreast of education and technology needed to keep your horse healthy and you as an owner informed.

Vet supplies 
Medication, supplements, bandage materials and grooming supplies  are available in our office.
